The most commonly asked beauty question of them all…

The most commonly asked beauty question of them all…

It’s that age old question that has puzzled many of you and just to make it more confusing there seems to be thousands of different opinions on the matter. Do you apply foundation and then concealer? Or do you apply concealer and then foundation?

After a quick poll at Sleek MakeUP HQ it seems that everyone has their own foundation and concealer routine – most of the gals here apply concealer and THEN foundation. But wouldn’t applying foundation after concealer simply ruin all your hard concealing work?? Or is concealer the base of a perfect finish?

After much research in to the topic here’s what we’ve learned… do whatever works for YOU!

THE CONCEALER AND THEN FOUNDATION METHOD:

This method is best for those who don’t want too much coverage or if you are already blessed with clear skin. As usual, always begin with a prepped base including primer if possible for a smooth finish. Apply concealer on to areas that need a little camouflaging and blend seamlessly in to the skin. Then apply foundation very sparingly from the centre of the face outwards. Set with a light coating of powder mainly on the T-zone. Finito!

THE FOUNDATION AND THEN CONCEALER METHOD:

If you prefer a full finish or need a little extra coverage this is the method for you! Start with a beautifully prepped base. Always moisturise prior to applying foundation and wait a few minutes for it to sink in. Apply foundation as sparingly as possible starting from the centre of the face outwards. Ensure the foundation has set before applying concealer over it so that it doesn’t move or smear when you touch it again. Tap your concealer on to areas that need extra coverage and blend using a tapping motion with your ring finger. This ensures that the concealer doesn’t look dry or cakey once blended. Finally apply powder lightly including over the areas that have been concealed. Et voila!

How do you apply your base? Tell us your comments below!

Valentines Day – what does it mean to you? Is it just another day? Are you all loved up with a special someone, or are you rocking singledom? To us here at Sleek MakeUP HQ, Valentines Day definitely means a couple of things…

1) Red Lipstick!

Is wearing a red lip for V-day a massive cliché or the best way to embrace the day?!

We’re all about True Colour lipstick in Russian Roulette, a matte deep red shade that flatters all skin tones, a must for V-Day in our opinion!

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/russian.roulette2.jpg"}}" alt="russian-roulette" width="278" height="300" />

2)    CHOCOLATE…

And lots of it! Today we’ll mainly be munching our way through this lot:

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/v.daychoc.jpg"}}" alt="v-day chocolates" width="402" height="300" />

To Brow or not to brow?

Brows are a much debated topic here at Sleek MakeUP HQ. How dark should they be? What shape? Do we really need to fill in our brows?! The resounding answer is YES!

According to Oliya, our Product Development Manager, it’s very important to keep your eyebrows neat and groomed as it frames your face and your eyes, making them stand out to perfection. To prove her point, Oliya preened Sheena’s (our PR assistant) brows using our very own Brow Kit. After her brows had been coiffed and groomed to perfection we immediately wanted our own pair of impressively neat and tidy brows! We’re sold! So here’s the brow down…

• Get your brows shaped professionally at least once a year. The pro’s can create the most flattering eyebrow shape for you, and once this has been done all you need to do is maintain them!

• Try to make sure any regrowth is plucked out immediately, if it’s left it can make the area around your eyes look untidy, and you will gradually lose the shape.

• When you begin grooming, start by brushing your eyebrows using an eyelash comb starting from the beginning of your eyebrows outwards. This way you can see exactly which hairs need to be eliminated!

• Using a flat angled brush carefully outline your eyebrows starting from the beginning of your eyebrow outwards. If you find it easier, outline the bottom first and move upwards.

• Once you have shaped your eyebrows fill them in with the same brush using the flat side to produce a smooth effect.

• Next step is to fill them in using a powder in order to ‘set’ your work!

• Give brows a final comb through to get rid of any excess product for a natural finish. Pay particular attention to the beginning of your eyebrow as this is the biggest give away that they aren’t your natural brows!

What do you think? Are you wowed by brows?! Send us your comments below!

Luminous Skin

As seen at London, New York, Paris AND Milan fashion week, luminous skin shone out (literally!) at all the shows. Radiance boosting foundations, illuminating powders and liquids were used to give skin an ethereal glow. Radiant skin is universally flattering as it gives tired skin a welcome boost, washes over any imperfections and makes any complexion look healthy and alive. We love love LOVE this trend and can’t wait to try it out!

<img src="{{media url="/SKIN.fahionweeks2013-2222_1.jpg"}}" alt="Luminous Skin" />

Tropical Eyes

A simple but effective pop of colour on the eyes is enlivening and empowering! London, Paris and New York featured brightly coloured lids or liner, whilst the rest of the face was kept flawless and natural. Our Eau La La liners are ideal for adding a bold yet chic injection of colour to eyes. Either smudge the shade around the eye or line top and bottom lash line to imitate the trend. We’re already addicted!

<img src="{{media url="/SKIN.fahionweeks2013_1.jpg"}}" alt="Tropical Eyes" />

Ultra matte vibrant lips

Maybe the most dominant beauty trend at the shows was the fabulously colourful look-at-me lips! We already rock this trend on a day to day basis, it’s an easy way to dress up a look and give a distinctive edge to your makeup. We urge you to try it! Our True colour lipstick range contains both matte and sheen finishes making it easy to pick up a matte formula. With shades like Loved up, a playful pink, Russian Roulette, a deep matte red, or Tangerine Scream, a zesty orange shade, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Tips and Tricks of the Trade…

January is definitely a month where we feel the need for a little extra help with looking and feeling great, and where better to pick up a few tips than at Sleek MakeUP HQ! We had a quick run round the office to see what quick tips we could pick up; our girls know their stuff…

Oliya, Product Development Manager:

When I buy new mascara I always keep my old one too. New mascaras tend to be much runnier so you can’t get a volumised look with them for at least couple of weeks, so I use my old mascara first as the formulation is slightly thicker. Then I apply my new mascara afterwards to lengthen lashes. I do this until my new mascara becomes thicker.

Traci, PR Manager:

A simple but effective way to pop your eye colour is by applying white mascara to lashes first, Magnitude Mascara works perfectly for this. Then apply Eye Drama Mascara in Purple Haze for stand out, gorgeous eyes.

Zahra, Product Development Assistant:

For an ultra natural and easy way to contour, use a light concealer/foundation to highlight the skin where the light falls (tops of cheekbones, centre of the nose, cupids bow). Then use a darker shade of foundation/concealer as a contour shade (under the cheekbones, jawline and both sides of the nose). I use Be Beautiful Blemish Balm in Light and Medium to contour, the weightless consistency gives a natural, glowing finish.

Another great tip – when applying eye shadow try to keep your eye open. This gives you a better idea of the finished result as you can see where the eye shadow is being placed.

Terri, Junior Administrator:

When filling in your eyebrows the trick is to make them look like ‘sisters’ rather than ‘twins’. This gives a more natural effect, plus it stops you spending hours making them look totally identical which looks harsh and unnatural.

Inês, Digital Marketing Assistant:

Try wearing Eau La La Liner as a full coverage lipstick. It’s easy to apply and has a long lasting matte effect. For a subtle shine add Glossed in Clarity over the top. Amp up your look at night and get experimenting to find new ways to wear your favourite products! I like to apply Eau La La Liner in Dragon Fruit to lips and then tap Glitter Dip It in Diablo over the top for an intense glittery lip that lasts all night long!

Alice, Copywriter:

My favourite trick is to add a light shimmery highlight to inner corners of the eyes. This really helps to open up the eye on tired days, and draws attention away from imperfections. The shade ‘Taupe’ in the Au Natural i-Divine works perfectly for this. I also use the same shade to add a light shimmer to cheeks if my complexion is looking a little dull from winter weather.

Hope you managed to pick up a tip or two, tell us your top tip on our Facebook and Twitter pages!

Sleek MakeUP's Clothes Show Live Diary

As every fashion lover knows, no outfit is complete until a touch of makeup has been applied! That’s why our marketing team headed straight to the hub of beauty and fashion at Clothes Show Live held at Birmingham’s NEC. We prepared ourselves for a week of makeup, fashion, goody bag loving and beauty obsessing to our hearts content!

Check out our diary that reveals our ups, downs, sheer madness and the beauty buzz at the amazing Clothes Show Live!

DAY 1

Faced with a 6 o’ clock start at Euston station made for a slightly painful experience, but we relied on our excitement (and large doses of caffeine!) to get us through. A quick journey later and we found ourselves in the freezing cold North! We gave our muscles a serious workout heaving all the luggage over to the hotel, but as soon as we arrived the hotel manager, Mrs Lee, made us feel relaxed and right at home with several cups of tea and plenty of biscuits! Admittedly, the hotel definitely had a slight ‘horror movie-esque’ feel to it, but we settled in and applied plenty of Lash Out mascara (a girls best friend on tired days!), before heading off to the NEC to set up our impressive Sleek MakeUP stand!

Setting up was definitely the hardest part of our time there… but armed with plenty of yummy goodies to nibble on (thank goodness for chocolate peanuts!), we finally finished arranging our Sleek MakeUP stand at half past 10 at night! The stand looked fantastic but needless to say by this time we were four exhausted Sleeksters and agreed to get back to the hotel sharpish! Unfortunately by that time the freezing weather had turned in to torrential down pour, and we were forced to run like escapees through the rain, load up our get-away car and drive like mad back to our hotel to sleep away our nightmare set up day!

DAY 2

Waking up bright and early for our first day of the event we headed straight to the NEC to make sure our Sleek MakeUP staff were all ready to go and that our hard work on the stand was looking perfect. Fighting puffy eyes was no problem; limited edition Sparkle i-Divine gave us back our sparkle (!) and we prepared ourselves for the fashion and beauty loving fans that would soon be trooping through the gates of the NEC!

Our Sleek MakeUP team helping us during the event included five gorgeous gals and one hunk of an event manager, all straight from the heart of Birmingham! We LOVED their enthusiasm, sense of humour and their down-to-earth attitude. One of the girls was even a makeup artist and got to grips with foundation matching using our 30 shades of New Skin Revive foundation. Plenty of happy fans walked away from our stand with luminous skin that looked totally natural, nothing makes us happier than a perfect match!

As the event got busier, we soon became aware of a buzz happening across the hall with a huge crowd and cameras flashing away! As it turned out; Peter Andre had arrived and was signing autographs for a huge flock of girls…Some were even crying, it was like Beatles mania!! Other celebs we saw at the event included Amy Childs, Gemma Collins, Katie Price, and V V Brown, who all caused great commotion throughout the event, with interviews on stage and autograph signing.

After a successful first day we were all in the mood for a girly night in our hotel, complete with face masks, hot chocolate and chick flicks, is there anything better than a relaxing girls night in?!

DAY 3

Another early start meant another caffeine trip for us; but although the coffee woke us up, we still felt the need for an extra lift! Enter Sleek MakeUP’s Glitter Dip-It’s, liquid liners loaded with micro-glitter that gives a great boost to tired eyes, or if you’re feeling experimental apply to lips like our girl Inês! For uber sparkly lips that stay on all day, Inês used Eau La La in Dragon Fruit on the lips first as a primer and then loaded lips with Glitter Dip It in Diablo, a bright look-at-me pink! Multi-purpose products are so the way to go in this day and age darling…

We managed to get some serious bargain hunting done, with plenty of vintage gems just waiting to be adopted we couldn’t face leaving them there! Thank god for the bargain prices otherwise we would have been in trouble… being a real vintage lover, I fell head over heels for a silver sequinned butterfly top, as you might have guessed we love a bit of sparkle here at Sleek MakeUP!

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/butterfly.top.jpg"}}" alt="Silver Sequinned Butterfly Top" />

Our gorgeous PR assistant Sheena picked up the brightest fuzziest vintage Christmas jumper ever for a total bargain! We feel cosy just looking at it! Our social media gal Ines picked up an 80’s-tastic embroidered vintage cardigan ideal for look glam but staying warm, what’s not to love?! Vintage finds we heart you!!

With so many other brands surrounding us at Clothes Show, we had a peek at what hair care had to offer our tresses. The uber talented stylists at Paul Mitchell provided us with hair styles each morning which we all highly appreciated, especially as we’d arrive each morning with crazy bed hair, only to be sprayed, styled and coiffed by hair pro’s, lets just say it was definitely something we could get used to!! Our girl Assunta treated herself to long dark hair extensions which she LOVED, “I feel Like Rapunzel!”

Meanwhile up on the style studio stage, model and musician VV Brown gave an interesting talk about her vintage brand VV vintage (www.vvvintage.com) and ethical trading. VV brown is the ethical ambassador for the clothes show live. Her ethos is all about the beauty of up cycling. We loved her positivity and passion for what she believes in. Our lovely Sheena had a photo with her after the talk, we couldn’t believe how tall and gorgeous she was! Girl Crush alert!

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/sheena.vv.jpg"}}" alt="Sheena and VV Brown" />

Super cool model and presenter Annalise Dayes came over to our Sleek makeUP stand for a chat and of course a Sleek MakeUP fix. Annalise is currently on Americans next top model- the British invasion on Sky living. We’ve got some serious hair envy!!

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/sheena.annalise.jpg"}}" alt="Sheena and Annalise" />

After a busy day of celeb-spotting and vintage shopping we were more than happy to get back to our hotel, but first we nipped in to Tesco’s and picked up plenty of Snack-a-Jacks and some hearty soup, the ultimate comfort food in cold weather!

DAY 4

Sunday was with us already and we couldn’t believe how fast our event was unravelling! Our Sleek MakeUP goody bags were selling like hot cakes at the event, at only £10 each for four products and being called after two rather well known supermodels helped. ‘Kate’ and ‘Naomi’, have you heard of them??

After having our hair bigged up (literally!) with Paul Mitchell stylists and with plenty of True Colour lipstick in our favourite shade, Vamp, we felt more than ready to face the day! The last few days have made us all realise how empowering and re-energising makeup is, even if you’re feeling tired with a long day ahead of you, a gorgeous lip colour or stand out eyes can really rev you up and set you on your way!

We managed to somehow squeeze in a little more retail time our lunch hour! First stop was jewellery brand Rya V who sells absolutely gorgeous jewellery! Our own little magpie Sheena looooves cocktail rings and statement necklaces and couldn’t wait to pick up some more bling! After much oohing and ahhing she opted for a ring and beaded collar necklace. Fab accessory designer Tatty Devine also got a lot of love from all of us Sleek MakeUP gals; we all adorned ourselves with plenty of unique, whimsical jewels that Tatty Devine is known for. I picked up a black leather cuff bracelet and a plectrum necklace which I adore!

By 5 o’clock we were feeling fairly weary, but had a massive pick-me-up when we went to watch Henry Holland presenting the Clothes Show Live fashion show! The crowd went wild for goody bags and freebies, whilst the show had a total fashionista feel, complete with an Anna Wintour look-a-like! After running around like loons all day selling, shopping and organising we were all ready to sink in to our beds, but the excitement wasn’t over yet! The X factor final had us all totally gripped and we went mad for the gorgeous James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas. Congrats to James for bagging first prize, well deserved we think, even though Jahmene Douglas is so sweet! Rihanna looked divine in a gorgeous Alexander Wang white mini dress. Her flawless skin blew us all away, has she been using our super nourishing Be Beautiful Blemish Balm we wonder?

DAY 5

Our second to last day went by in a Sleek MakeUP second! We couldn’t believe how much fun we’d been having and how fast it had gone. By this time word had got round at that Sleek MakeUP were at Clothes Show Live and we had plenty more fans throwing themselves at our famous i-Divines and True Colour lippies!

Our makeup artists Laura and Ines were foundation matching left right and centre! One customer thought she was the shade Demerara in our New Skin Revive foundation, but after some trailing and testing Inês found she was actually suited to the shade Sweet Honey which is SEVEN shades under the one she picked! It made us think about how many other gals are wondering round rocking a foundation shade too dark or too light for them. Ladies – there is a foundation shade to perfectly match your skin tone, with 30 shades of foundations in the Sleek MakeUP line we’re happy to report that we can cure all foundation matching dilemmas!

Our last night at Clothes Show Live called for some serious treat time! We picked up plenty of food and took it back to our hotel for what we like to call a “bedroom picnic”, a must-do for four girls away from home! We guzzled and gossiped the night away, it was the best Sleek MakeUP girly bonding sesh ever and much needed after our busy week of Sleek Make-upping! Hilarious programme ‘Snog, marry avoid,’ kept us highly entertained featuring some of the wackiest looks ever, we couldn’t help but feel we wanted to give them a makeover (or under!) with some our Sleek MakeUP goodness! Including some much needed foundation matching…

DAY 6

This was our last day and we were all feeling a little sad that our Clothes Show Live adventure was over. It had been a beauty blast and we want to do it all over again! We were pleasantly surprised to find that our last day was our busiest day, with the Sleek MakeUP stand packed to the brim with eager fans all hoping to get their hands on some amazing offers! The day went by in a whirl of selling and explaining new products and ways they can be used. There’s nothing we like better than talking to our fans about the benefits of Sleek MakeUP. Our famous Rose Gold blush had plenty of adoring fans as usual, we know we’re biased but there really is no better blush to create a healthy flush of colour that suits all skin tones!

Eventually it was time to wave goodbye to our Sleek MakeUP stand and rush to the train station to get back to good old blighty! We hugged our amazing staff goodbye, what on earth would we have done without their energy and positive attitudes?! We loved them all!

Still armed with foodie goodness from the night before, we spent the train journey eating and reminiscing about our week of Sleek MakeUPping at Clothes Show Live! The event had been a total success, but we couldn’t help but feel happy to sleep in our very own beds that night…

Were you there too? Tell us your experience on our Facebook page! :)

Beauty Winter Tips by Shanina McLeod

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/umbrella1.jpg"}}" alt="" width="312" height="200" />

Braving the rain

So summer has definitely left us behind and we have now to look forward to but wind rain and cold. Since we can’t all look quite as hot ad Rihanna in her chart-topping Umbrella video when it rains, I thought I’d put together a few tips to help us girls looking pretty as winter sets in.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; vertical-align: middle;" src="{{media url="/water2.jpg"}}" alt="" width="156" height="200" />

Don’t dry out - Keep Hydrated

In the winter months, it’s common for us to drink less water than we would in the heat, but keeping your body hydrated will help you to avoid the dry and chapped skin what goes hand in hand with cold weather.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/moisturize3.jpg"}}" alt="" />

Be a softy this festive season - Stay Moisturised

Lips and hands always feel the brunt of the cold as they are most exposed. Make sure you keep lip balm and hand cream handy to banish dryness as soon as it starts. Winter is also the time when greasier products come in handy. Switch your usual moisturiser for a body oil and your skin will stay supple and soft.

Just because we’re comfort eating - Remember Healthy Snacks

We all know Omega-3 is great for body and mind, but ensuring a diet of omega fatty acids during the winter will help skin stay smoother from the inside. These can be worked into your day by snaking on almonds and sunflower seeds.

Even though its cold outside - Don’t Forget SPF

Like water, SPF is often neglected during the winter months, when there are less hours of sunshine, but it’s still an important part of your skincare regime. It will keep you protected from harmful UV rays, particularly when there’s snow on the ground to reflect the sunlight, as well as giving your skin a protective barrier from the harsh wind and cold. Double Plus.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/kiss4.jpg"}}" alt="" width="200" height="200" />

If you want a Christmas kiss - Winter-proof your makeup

Simple tricks and tips can keep your makeup in tip top condition when the weather is working against you. Swapping a wax-based eyeliner for a silicone one will let you create sexy smudgy looks perfect for dark nights. Avoiding sparkly lipsticks and glosses in winter is also advisable as these will show up chapped lips. Stick to moisturising lipsticks with less sheen if you’re after a kiss under the mistletoe!

Breakfast in style...by Hollie of “Tales of a Beauty Journo”

One of the highlights of my working week is catching up with beauty PR's over brekkie or afternoon tea; we chat about the beauty brands they look after and discuss the latest launches that might be relevant to what I'm working on over some delicious food. Often, they'll bring along a goody bag of their latest products so I can get a feel for them and keep on top of what’s new... if you ever spot people going through a bag of beauty products while tucking into scrambled egg and smoked salmon, spritzing this and swatching that, the likelihood is it's a beauty journalist and a PR!

Over the years I've built up a little black book of my favourite places to go to meet with PRs. I consider myself very lucky that my job has such a lovely social aspect, as I'm not sure these wonderful places would feature very regularly in my calendar otherwise.

Below are my personal favourite venues for chic breakfast meetings in the capital...

The Fountain Restaurant at Fortnum & Mason
BEST FOR: Elegant dining

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/FORTNUM_MASON.jpg"}}" alt="" />

This sumptuous restaurant features an elegant duck egg and pastel interior with chic chandeliers and floral details. Tea is served in ornate silver teapots and there's a fantastic selection of hen's eggs available. It's the type of place that makes you want to embrace 'proper' tea drinking etiquette – all you'd expect from the Royal grocer.

Automat
BEST FOR: A cool New York vibe

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/AUTOMAT_5_.jpg"}}" alt="" />

If you're a sucker for American brekkies, you'll love Automat. The New York style brasserie oozes cool and has a relaxed, stylish atmosphere complete with booths and table lamps. It's the best choice if you're looking to indulge – the stacks of buttermilk pancakes with strawberries, blueberries and maple syrup are amazing, as are the waffles with cream and the bourbon vanilla French toast with streaky bacon.

The Riding House Cafe
BEST FOR: Central location

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/RIDING_HOUSE_CAFE.jpg"}}" alt="" />

Located on Great Titchfield Street just off Oxford Street, this new bustling, modern restaurant attracts a real mix of cool media types and suits. It has a rustic feel with benches and exposed brick and there's something to suit all taste buds including a great selection of juices and smoothies, making it the perfect place to grab a quick bite in style. I can highly recommend the vanilla clotted cream!

The Northall at The Corinthia
BEST FOR: Attention to detail

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/NORTHALL_CORINTHIA_1.jpg"}}" alt="" />

If you like your dining experience to include exquisite attention to detail, The Northall restaurant won't disappoint. The inventive presentation of the food is a delight, as is the fantastic service and quality of the food. It's everything you'd want from a delicious breakfast with a sleek, intimate atmosphere. It also serves up the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever tried!

Dean Street Townhouse
BEST FOR: Networking

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/DEAN_STREET_TOWNHOUSE.jpg"}}" alt="" />

Whenever I go to Dean Street Townhouse, I seem to recognise most people in there; thanks to its cool, buzzy atmosphere it appears to be the media industry’s destination of choice. A great base for networking.

Roast
BEST FOR: Tasty British produce

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/ROAST.jpg"}}" alt="" />

Located in the heart of Borough Market, Roast uses nothing but the finest quality British produce. Foodies will love the varied ingredients available that offer something completely different from your typical breakfast menu.

The Soho Hotel
BEST FOR: Food intolerances

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/SOHO_HOTEL.jpg"}}" alt="" />

The Soho Hotel, often the venue of choice for industry events and press days, is a constant hub of activity, and brekkie is no exception. As well as offering delicious cooked breakfast options, the stylish Refuel restaurant features a wonderful breakfast bar that caters for all sorts of food allergies and intolerances, meaning that the bright, vibrant venue has something to suit everyone.

The Wolseley
BEST FOR: Stylish interior

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/THE_WOLSELY.jpg"}}" alt="" />

The Wolsey is quite simply a great place to start your morning. The super stylish café, popular with celebrities, is decorated in Grand European style with ornate detailing such as arches, pillars and an impressive marble floor, making it a lavish choice for breakfast. The food is equally as delightful.

My fantasy workspace… by Hollie of “Tales of a Beauty Journo”

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my fantasy blogging workspace. Thanks to increasingly popular websites such as Pinterest and We Heart It, it’s never been easier to collect a digital scrapbook of stylish imagery to inspire you - whether you’re daydreaming about fashion, interiors, beauty or travel. You can follow my mood boards on Pinterest.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/blog_post3_1.jpg"}}" alt="Test image" />

My preferred blogging space of the moment is my brand new super comfy corner sofa, complete with my gorgeous little silver kitten Bobby as a companion (he loves the laptop) and Sex and the City episodes on loop. While it’s a spot in which I feel truly content, it’s also one with many distractions, so not always conducive to hard work…

As a blogger it’s important to surround yourself with items that fuel your your creativity, be that your favourite fresh flowers (in my case, peonies peonies peonies), chic scented candles (I love the zingy, energising fragrance of Neom Luxury Organics’ Happiness Home Candle) or creatively displayed images of meaningful places and faces (I adore these Bespoke Heart Maps by Bombus, available at Notonthehighstreet.com – they source beautiful vintage maps of your most treasured destinations and turn them into gorgeous artwork).

However limited your space and budget, there are always small touches you can make to personalize and jazz it up, whether that’s using an empty Diptyque candle as a stanionery holder, making a feature wall out of pretty wallpaper or simply putting stylish postcards or clippings on a pinboard.

Though I’ll be starting small when it comes to luring myself off the couch to create my own area, these are the workspace images inspiring me right now…

Hollie of “Tales of a Beauty Journo” shares her summer suitcase secrets…

June in Blighty may have been a washout so far, but hopefully you’ve got a sizzling holiday in sunnier climes to look forward to this summer! In 8 weeks I’m heading to ‘Marbs’ for a fun girly getaway, followed by a relaxing escape with my boyfriend and some friends to our Portuguese property in the Algarve 3 weeks later. Take a glimpse at my holiday packing list and luggage essentials…

My holiday wardrobe is…

feminine but comfortable; I like to keep cool in floaty fabrics with pretty detailing and bright, standout accessories. During the day I choose bold bikinis with frills and cute prints to flatter my pear shaped figure, accessorized with intricate shell and starfish pendants and oversized sunnies. Evening staples in my suitcase include colourful maxi dresses, wearable, go-with-everything wedges and chic, white pieces – the perfect companion to sunkissed skin.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/blog_post1_1.jpg"}}" alt="Bold bikini with frills" />

My failsafe packing secret is…

styling holiday outfits as thoroughly as possible before I leave - a pre-planned wardrobe saves precious holiday time, plus I avoid over packing and feel confident I’ve remembered everything! Being a beauty journalist, toiletries are predictably the items I find hardest to limit… I try to take miniatures and multi-purpose products wherever possible, but I’d never compromise on my must-have beauty items to do so.

My poolside essentials are…

first and foremost, SPF protection. St Tropez’s suncare range is the best I’ve tried – it contains MELANOBRONZE, an exclusive innovation that stimulates melanin production, giving a speedy golden glow and enhancing my natural tan while it protects. For my face I choose Dermalogica’s Solar Defence Booster; I wear it alone on bare skin but it can also by added to your natural moisturiser or foundation for added sun protection if you need extra coverage. After protecting my hair with sunscreen, I spritz on surf spray to achieve manageable texture and style my blonde locks in a topknot, adding pretty floral hair accessories. Summer holidays are a great opportunity to allow your skin to breathe so in the daytime I stay make-up free with the exception of a bold, hydrating lip colour, which I team with oversized sunglasses. You’ll also find a camera to capture memories and a great read in my beach bag – I’ve recently finished two amazing books that I’d highly recommend to holiday book worms: Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/blog_post2_1.jpg"}}" alt="Me Before You by Jojo Moyes" />

My pre-holiday prep starts with…

healthy eating. I usually start my beach body countdown around 8 weeks before my departure date, aiming to replace stodgy meals and sweet cravings with fish, vegetables, salad and fresh berries. For me, nothing is more of a confidence booster than a pampering beauty regime, so in the run up to my hols I pay particular attention to the texture and condition of my skin in my indulgent evening bath. I swear by Caudalie’s Crushed Cabernet Scrub, a grainy exfoliator that not only buffs away dull skin but also contains six cellulite-busting, organic essential oils that tackle problem areas and refine the contours of the silhouette. Other summer bodycare staples you’ll find in my bathroom cabinet are rich, tropical smelling body butter and the multi-purpose Wilkinson Sword Quattro razor. A pre-holiday trip to the hairdressers and a vibrant mani-pedi are absolute musts, and for face framing brows and a fuss free flutter without make-up I rely on professional eyelash and eyebrow tinting – I’ve recently discovered Malika Salons, which are a luxurious one-stop shop for speedy hair removal.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/blog_post3_1.jpg"}}" alt="A vibrant mani-pedi is an absolute must" />

My evening holiday beauty routine…

starts with soothing skin treats to restore moisture and comfort sun damage – I recommend always packing pure aloe vera gel to heal scorched skin and prevent peeling. Post shower I slather on Lancaster’s Tan Maximizer Rich Firming Body Cream, a rich aftersun that deepens and prolongs my tan and firms those dreaded wobbly bits simultaneously. Make-up wise, I opt for easy to blend cream formulas in favour of powder ones and stick to cosmetics that I know are long-lasting so I can focus on having fun! infuses pouts with creamy, intense colour thanks to its highly pigmented, moisturising formula, making it my holiday lippie of choice; Amped, Baby Doll and Heartbreaker are the perfect holiday shades. To keep my wavy hair in check I rely on Moroccanoil Original Treatment Oil, it nourishes hair and banishes frizz so I can let it dry naturally without worrying about frizz.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="/blog_post4_1.jpg"}}" alt="Sleek MakeUP’s non-drying True Colour Lipstick" />

My in-flight essentials are…

a collection of airport-purchased glossy magazines, my Samsung notebook complete with a selection of films, fleecy socks, a pashmina blanket, hydrating facial spritz and a celebratory glass of fizz to get me in the holiday mood!
